Bible Verses About the Resurrection
Jesus was not the first person to die and come back to life. The writers of the Old Testament record a few accounts of people who were brought back to life.
- The widow of Zarephath’s son (1 Kings 17:17-24)
- The Shunammite woman’s son (2 Kings 4:18-37)
- The man who was thrown into Elisha’s grave (2 Kings 13:20-21)
And there were several accounts in the New Testament of Jesus and His disciples bringing people back from the grips of death.
However, the resurrection of Jesus from the dead was eternal. He is “the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:20). The others who returned eventually faced the finality of physical death until the resurrection of the saints.
Matthew 16:21 (ESV)
From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
Matthew 16:21 (ESV)
Mark 8:31 (ESV)
And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again.
Mark 8:31 (ESV)
Luke 9:21-22 (ESV)
And he [Jesus] strictly charged and commanded them to tell this to no one, saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.”
Luke 9:21-22 (ESV)
After the second miraculous feeding of thousands of people, Jesus began telling His disciples what was going to happen.
Jesus prophesied His rejection from the Jewish leaders, His suffering under Roman rule, His death, and His resurrection after three days. They were to tell no one. And they didn’t comprehend what was to happen until the event of the resurrection.
But after the resurrection of Jesus, God opened their eyes to complete understanding. Jesus’ death was all part of God’s redeeming plan. Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would be “bruised for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5). He would take our sins and die on the cross, paying the ultimate price. On the third day, He rose victoriously over the grave! Jesus is alive, indeed!
The Resurrection Day was the completed work of God’s plan of redemption for humankind. If Christ would have been crucified and not risen from the dead, He would have been considered just another great teacher or prophet. But His resurrection is absolute proof that He conquered death and fulfilled the Father’s plan.
John 14:1–3 (ESV)
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”
John 14:1–3 (ESV)
Jesus gave more encouragement when He instructed His disciples to take heart. He would be leaving, but He would return. In the meantime, Jesus promised them a Helper, the Holy Spirit. (John 14:26)
John 11:25-26 (ESV)
Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?”
John 11:25-26 (ESV)
As Jesus spoke to the woman at the well, He proclaimed He was the resurrection and the life and promised her that anyone who believed in Him would live eternally after dying physically.
Job 19:25-26 (ESV)
For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last he will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God.
Job 19:25-26 (ESV)
The oldest book in the Bible is probably Job. But Job knew that there would be an afterlife. He knew that when he died, he would live with God.
1 Corinthians 15:21-22 (ESV)
For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
1 Corinthians 15:21-22 (ESV)
When Adam sinned in the Garden, he brought death to everyone after him. It was the punishment for disobedience. But Christ rose from the dead, giving the gift of life to all who believe. It is a gift from God.
1 Peter 1:3 (ESV)
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.
1 Peter 1:3 (ESV)
Ephesians 1:18-20 (ESV)
Having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might that he worked in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places.
Ephesians 1:18-20 (ESV)
Paul prays for the church in Ephesus that the eyes of their hearts would be open to God’s immeasurable greatness and power. God is all-powerful, and it was by this same power that He created the universe, breathed life into man, and raised Jesus from the dead that will someday raise all who call Him Lord.
Philippians 3:10-11 (ESV)
That I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
Philippians 3:10-11 (ESV)
Philippians 3:20-21 (ESV)
But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.
Philippians 3:20-21 (ESV)
Paul desired to be like Christ, to share in His suffering for God; to walk the pathway to death, not obtaining earthly possessions, but to keep all his attention on what God had called him to do. He encouraged believers to understand the importance of everything else in this world pales in comparison to what Christ did for us.
The power of Christ’s resurrection is available to us as we submit ourselves to God’s will to do whatever He calls us to do. Not in our might but by the power available to us as children of the living God.
Romans 6:4 (ESV)
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
Romans 6:4 (ESV)
Jesus lived a sinless life, died on the cross, and was raised three days later. Baptism is the picture of Christ’s life and our commitment to follow Him. However, we come to salvation as dead men, being dead in our sins (Ephesians 2:1-3). We are sinners by nature.
Jesus’ mangled body hung on the cross. His hands and feet pierced through with spikes—blood dripping from the crown of thorns that set on His head. His face was swollen…His flesh was barely attached to His bones, and the vulturous haters circled the cross, mocking Him yet curious to see if He might perform one more miracle. “He saved others; let’s see if He can save Himself!” they sneered.
But after accepting God’s gift of salvation, we are buried with Him (as we go under the water of baptism) and then raised out of the water to live a new life, where we are “seated with Christ in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 2:6)
Christ lived a sinless life and then died. We are dead and then made alive to walk a sinless life. Although we will never obtain sinlessness because we still have that old nature. But with our Helper, the Holy Spirit, teaching us to walk with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23), we will continually grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior (1 Peter 3:18)
Romans 8:34 (ESV)
Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.
Romans 8:34 (ESV)
After the resurrection, Christ took His eternal position at God’s right hand, where He continually intercedes for the saints (us). We have no mediator besides Christ (1 Timothy 2:5). We do not need another to intercede.
Christ suffered, died, and rose again, conquering death and the grave. And as Satan, the deceiver and accuser of the saints, breathes out his lies and threats against the redeemed (Revelation 12:10), Jesus leans a little closer to the ear of God and proclaims, “If you remember, her sins are covered and she has been washed white as the snow. Go away Satan, because she belongs to me!” (Isaiah 1:18)
2 Timothy 1:10 (ESV)
And which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
2 Timothy 1:10 (ESV)
In Paul’s second letter to his protegee, Timothy, Paul encourages Timothy to “stir up the gift of God” that he received early in life. God would provide not in fear but with power, love, and a sound mind.
Being witnesses of the resurrection of Jesus, Paul entices Timothy to share the afflictions of the Gospel of Christ as they were both called for God’s purpose, with God’s power, to God’s glory.
1 Corinthians 15:51-52 (ESV)
Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
1 Corinthians 15:51-52 (ESV)
We will all experience the resurrection when we are raptured to be with God in glory! God will change our mortal bodies to immortal bodies, and we will be made perfect.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (ESV)
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve like others who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (ESV)
Encourage one another with the truth of the resurrection of Jesus. This is a command! Those saints who have already passed, our loved ones, our spouse, parents, perhaps a child, or a best friend, will come with Jesus when He comes to rapture us from the world. We are to talk about this and encourage each other with the truth of the resurrection.
That trumpet will sound, the dead will receive their resurrected bodies, as Christ did, and we will all be changed, too! I can’t imagine the joy and thrill of seeing the Lord and all those who have gone before us as we disappear in the clouds like Jesus did when He left His disciples behind to win back lost sinners for the Lord.
Thank you for sharing these beautiful verses to bless and encourage us. Oh, the love our Lord has showered on us. God bless you!
