God’s Promises Are More Faithful Than A Pinky Promise
Have you ever made a pinky promise or crossed your heart for a friend, or sworn on a thousand Bibles that you would keep your promise to them?
People are fickle. No matter how much trust we have in humankind, we will at some point be disappointed. Oh sure, we take chances; we trust our spouse, we depend on a friend, we try to buy from reputable companies, but eventually, they all disappoint us. And we disappoint them.
No matter how dependable we are, we still fail to be perfect and live up to all our promises and expectations in our relationships. We’re just not perfect.
But God is! God is perfectly faithful to everything thing He has promised to do or promised to be. There are over 8,000 promises listed in the Bible, and God is faithful to keep them ALL!
His faithfulness has been proven over and over in His Word and has been recorded throughout history. Even in our personal lives, we see God’s faithfulness as we daily follow His teachings.
People will fail, there will be disappointing circumstances, promises do get broken, but God keeps all His promises, forever.
God Is Faithful And Just
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1 John 1:9 (ESV)
Most of us don’t like to see injustice. When someone breaks the law, we want to see them brought to justice. Even children have a sense of fair play, especially if it’s to their advantage.
That sense of justice comes naturally to us from our Creator.
When God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, He gave them one law. Everything in the Garden belonged to them, and everything was for them to take care of and enjoy, except for one tree.
With Satan’s help, Adam and Eve broke God’s law, and they faced the consequence of God’s justice.
God could’ve said, “Aww, that’s ok, you’re new to this world and probably forgot what I told you.”
But God’s attribute of justice could not allow that. Adam and Eve knew they were usurping their authority over God. He removed them from the garden, and they were sentenced to hard labor.
But the devastating consequence of God’s true judgment was the condemnation of humankind being eternally separated from the Creator Himself.
God Is Faithful to His Promises
The Lord is trustworthy in all He promises and faithful in all He does.
Psalm 145:13 (NIV)
God did not allow us to remain in that state of condemnation but promised a way to repair the relationship through a blood sacrifice, which He prepared for Adam and Eve. But we know this was just for a short time. There would soon be a greater Promise with a permanent fix.
God Is Faithful to His Word
Your word, LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; You established the earth, and it endures.
Psalm 119:89-90 (NIV)
In the beginning, God created EVERYTHING! He spoke everything into existence. He set the cosmos and the laws of nature into place. With the spoken word, God established our world and everything in it. And He continues to hold it all together on a moment-by-moment basis. God speaks of this with Jeremiah in chapter 33, verse 25, “…My covenant with day and night and the fixed order of heaven and earth [is established].”
God Is Faithful to the Faithless
If we are faithless, He remains faithful.
2 Timothy 2:13 (ESV)
God’s faithfulness does not only apply to those who are faithful to Him. His word is a covenant to those who obey and condemnation to those who are disobedient. God is faithful, trustworthy, dependable to all the promises, blessings, and judgments in the Bible. In 2 Timothy 2, Paul repeats a trustworthy saying to Timothy as he instructs him.
- If we die with Him [Jesus], we will also live with Him
- If we endure, we will reign with Him
- If we deny Him, He will deny us
- If we are faithless, He remains faithful—for He cannot deny Himself
God has promises for those who call Him Lord, but for those who do not accept His way, He will not accept them because of His faithfulness to do what has already been established.
Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. John 3:18 (ESV)
God’s Promises Are Yes And Amen
For all the promises of God find their Yes in Him. That is why it is through Him that we utter our Amen to God for His glory.
2 Corinthians 1:20 (ESV)
God’s promises are all true because God is truth and cannot lie. So with each promise, “Yes!” (truth), we are assured to shout, “Amen!” (so be it) to His glory.
His Promise to the World
When sin entered into the world, it brought animosity between God and humankind. God can not associate with sin, so He had to separate Himself from sinful man. In essence, we became enemies of God, serving another master, Satan.
But when God sent Jesus as a newborn babe that first Christmas morning, the angels announced Him as Peace because He would provide the way to bring peace between sinful humans and a holy God.
God provided a promise of peace to the whole world through the birth of the Savior. Yes! Amen!
His Promise to the Church
Jesus brought a new covenant. Although the chosen people were Jewish, their inheritance was extended to all people when they refused to accept Jesus as the true Messiah.
The new covenant began with the Apostles and the disciples that followed Christ. But it didn’t stop there. Even today, it is offered to everyone who chooses to accept Jesus’ provision of sanctification for themselves. Becoming a faithful member of the body of Christ is through trusting in the Lord for the payment on the cross for your sins.
The church that Jesus established would become the embodiment of His service here on earth. Yes! Amen!
His Promise for Eternity
I mean, who doesn’t want to live forever? Everyone is chasing after that fountain of youth because no one really wants to die. Unfortunately, death is about the only sure thing in this uncertain world.
But when we accept Christ as our Savior, we are promised the gift of eternal life after earthly death. Unfortunately, for those who do not accept Christ’s free gift of salvation, their eternity will be spent separated from the heavenly Father forever.
Whoever accepts Christ as their Savior will live eternally. Yes! Amen!
God’s Promises For Me
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.
1 John 5:13 (ESV)
We know God made promises to people in the Bible: Noah, Abraham, Moses, Rahab, Mary, etc. However, being a daughter of the King, I claim many of these promises for myself (you can too)!
So what are some of these promises that we can claim?
He Provides for My Needs.
God promises us that He will take care of us. There are several verses in the Bible with this promise attached to it.
In Matthew 6, He contrasts our importance with that of the sparrow and the grasses of the field. He sees the sparrow when it falls, and He clothes the fields in more splendor than any king.
How much more does God care for one of His own when we stumble or have some need that we have no idea how it will be met?
The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing. Psalm 34:10 (ESV)
He Helps Me in Times of Trouble.
God promises to be our comfort, guide, protector, deliverer, rock, hiding place, and refuge, and if that is not enough, there are so many more promises God shows us in His Word.
In Psalm 138:7, David describes the Lord as a companion when trouble is all around us. God is the one who sustains our life, and no one can take it from us. His hand is stretched out against our enemies so no one can harm us.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You preserve my life; You stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and Your right hand delivers me. Psalm 138:7 (ESV)
Reading the Psalm above, I picture God grabbing Satan by the nape of the neck and throwing him away from me when I call upon the Lord for help.
He Has Great Plans for My Life.
God promises us that He has great plans for us. He is so faithful in all His promises it would be foolish of us not to trust Him when we read verses like Jeremiah 29:11.
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)
God does not promise to make me rich, famous, or popular, but He has great plans for me. God wants to prosper me in the things that matter most.
- He allows me to store up riches in heaven where nothing can destroy it. (Matthew 6:19-21)
- He promises me a future that is filled with hope as He directs my path. (Proverbs 3:5-7)
- He is continually growing me in things that will be good for me and bring glory to Him (2 Peter 3:18)
He Will Never Turn His Back on Me or Leave Me.
Because God is trustworthy, we can believe Him when He tells us that He won’t leave us. He won’t turn His back on us. He will always be there to comfort and guide us no matter what comes.
There are times that we may experience loneliness and think that we have been left alone to fiend for ourselves, but that is simply not true.
Sometimes sin can keep us from feeling God’s presence or our complacency in our relationship with the Lord that keeps us from feeling Him near. And sometimes, our faith can question the truth about God’s Word. But God gives us verses like Deuteronomy 31:8 to assure us of His presence.
It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.
Deuteronomy 31:8 (ESV)
We don’t have to go it alone. We don’t have to fight the battles by ourselves or face uncertainties in life without His help. Jeremiah tells us that we can call to Him, and He will answer us.
Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. Jeremiah 33:3 (ESV)
He Will Give Me Rest from My Burdens.
Who doesn’t have problems, right? We all do. We may not see others’ problems because we are so consumed with our own, but we all have them.
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light. Matthew 11:28-30
For a long time, I couldn’t understand what Matthew was talking about in the verse above. I’ve had my share of problems. I’ve had my times where I’ve gone to bed crying about hard, heavy heartaches and couldn’t seem to do anything but worry during the waking hours.
But through questioning the Lord and meditating on His Word, I finally began to realize what God was telling me about finding rest for my soul and rolling my burdens onto Him. The more time I spent with Him, reading His Word and praising His name, the lighter my heart began to feel. His promises are always true.
How Can I Be Faithful To God?
Let’s not confuse the fact that eternal life comes only through Jesus’ work on the cross. But that’s not where our journey ends. As in any relationship, it takes all parties to be 100% involved to be successful.
So here are three things that will jump-start your relationship with God, because at the end of the day, don’t we all long to hear these words, “Well done, good and faithful servant…Enter into the joy of your Master.” Matthew 25:23 (ESV)
1. Pray—we cannot be faithful to God if we are not meeting with Him in prayer. Prayer opens the communication line between God and us. And prayer is not just about us talking, but most importantly, about us listening.
Do you find it hard to set aside time for prayer? You can pray anywhere. While you’re driving, waiting for coffee at Starbucks, and during the mundane chores of life. God’s ear is always open!
2. Study the Bible—we must be faithful in our study of His instruction manual for life. According to popular polls, most Christians don’t spend much time outside of church hours reading their Bibles. And yet, we all have questions about life.
How can we learn about humanity when we don’t spend any time studying the manual? God’s Word should be the foundation upon which we build all of our relationships and use it to make all our life choices.
3. Meditate on the Scriptures—meditation allows us to hear, experience, and be open to receive the specific truths and promises God has for us individually. Meditating is more than reading.
Meditation is like taking a bath instead of a shower. When you take a shower, you jump in, lather up, rinse off, and you’re out. But a bath is meant to be luxurious. You sit down, lay back, rest your eyes, read a book, and soak until every muscle is relaxed and renewed.
Meditation allows our minds to soak in that one promise or one truth or one principle and apply it accordingly to our life.
The Bible is full of the promises of God, and He is faithful to keep them all. I pray at His return that He may find us faithful, too.
