A Morning Routine: How to Pray According to the Bible

How to Pray According to the Bible: A Morning Routine for the Godly Woman

As godly women walking through the second half of life, we know the value of spending time with the Lord. But sometimes, we wonder how to make our morning prayer time more meaningful—or even where to begin. Life is full and fast. And some seasons feel more peaceful than others. Still, when we pray, things happen. Our hearts settle, our thoughts clear, and our day begins with the One who loves us most.

Let’s look together at a simple way to start our day in prayer—a way that honors God’s Word and allows us to grow closer to Him.

🌼 Why Morning Prayer Matters for the Godly Woman

Starting the day with prayer makes our hearts feel grounded and at peace. The Bible reminds us:

“O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.”
—Psalm 5:3 (ESV)

When we begin the day in the Lord’s presence, we notice a difference. Our conversations are more thoughtful, our decisions more prayerful, and our hearts more peaceful. As older women of faith, we also carry the call to model prayerful living for those coming behind us (Titus 2:3–5). That alone gives our quiet moments in prayer a beautiful purpose.

If life feels too busy or too loud to find quiet moments with God, you’re not alone. Here’s some encouragement for when we feel too busy to pray.

📖 How to Pray According to the Bible

The Bible doesn’t give us a one-size-fits-all script for prayer, but it does show us the heart behind it. Biblical prayer often includes:

  1. Praise – Recognizing who God is
  2. Confession – Being honest about where we fall short
  3. Thanksgiving – Thanking Him for His blessings
  4. Supplication – Bringing our needs and the needs of others to Him

This simple pattern helps guide our hearts when we pray, keeping our focus on who God is and how deeply we depend on Him.

☕ A Simple Morning Prayer Routine

Whether we sit quietly, kneel, or pray as we sip coffee, our posture can become part of our worship. Read more about the posture of prayer here.

When we carve out just 10 or 15 minutes with God in the morning, it doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be personal. Here’s a way we can draw near to Him:

1. Quiet Our Hearts
Take a deep breath. Sit with the Lord and say, “Here I am, Lord. I’m listening.”

2. Read a Short Passage
A Psalm, a verse from the Gospels, or even one line of Scripture can guide our time in prayer.

3. Pray from the Heart
We can follow the praise–confess–thank–ask pattern, or simply speak to Him like we would a dear friend.

💭 When We Pray Daily, What Changes?

We may wonder, does praying every day really make a difference? It’s a fair question—and one we all wrestle with from time to time. But when we look at Scripture, we see how important daily prayer has always been. Jesus rose early to pray (Mark 1:35). Daniel prayed three times a day (Daniel 6:10). Paul encouraged us to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

When we start the day with prayer, our heart becomes more peaceful. Our eyes are open to God’s presence. We walk through the day more aware of His hand in every detail. Try setting aside just 5 to 10 minutes each morning this week. Write down how you feel. Reflect on what shifts in your spirit. Prayer isn’t just a habit—it’s a holy invitation. And it truly makes a difference.
