We Serve An Awesome God
The Lord is slow to anger and great in power and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet.
-Nahum 1:3
The book of Nahum describes the vision of God’s awesome wrath against this city. Nahum tells of the patience of God while at the same time warning that God will by no means ignore the guilty. His vengeance and wrath came upon the wicked people of Nineveh because God punishes evil but protects those who trust in Him.
However, the last part of verse 3 is reminiscent of a very precious memory I have as a child. When I was a little girl, in the summer, when the moon appeared to be only a sliver, I imagined it was God’s fingernail. (Yeah, I know…) I didn’t know it at the time, but it was the waxing crescent or the waning crescent, depending on if it was developing or diminishing. But to me, it was a sign that God was there.
I imagined God as a giant walking above the clouds, hanging out with the angels, and watching over us, and keeping us safe. I have always believed in God but didn’t accept His invitation of eternal life until I was in my twenty’s. After reading Nahum 3:1, I wrote down the part that I cherished, and it’s been hanging on my desk for years.
“…the clouds are the dust of His feet.”
This little piece of the verse reminds me that God is GREAT and awesome, and even before I knew Him, He allowed me to experience that.
What Does It Mean That God Is Awesome?
I use the term awesome quite a bit, which is unfortunate because it should be a term reserved for God only (Job 25:2). According to Miriam-Webster, awe’s definition is: “an emotion variously combining dread, veneration, and wonder that is inspired by authority or by the sacred or sublime.”
God is awesome! He deserves our reference, our honor, and our wonder. And we see a lot of this awesomeness in His creation.
